Green fuels' certificate system starts to try

On October 10, the "Global Sustainable Transport Certification" (GSTC), jointly initiated by China Energy Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (CEEC), the China International Transport Innovation and Knowledge Center, and other entities, commenced trial operations for sustainable transport fuel certification in Beijing. The first batch of projectsincluded in the trial operation of the certification system are the CEEC Hydrogen Energy Company's Jilin Songyuan Project (green ammonia) and the Towngas Inner Mongolia Yigao Project (green methanol).
Sustainable fuels are crucial for China to achieve its "dual carbon" goals (carbon peak and carbon neutrality) and ensure energy security. Currently, with the accelerating green and low-carbon transformation of global ocean shipping, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is expediting the construction of its net-zero framework system. The IMO net-zero framework represents a pivotal step in promoting globally unified governance of carbon emissions, with international certification systems serving as a key link in participating in the global carbon emission governance system. Establishing an international sustainable fuel certification system initiated by China is a significant measure for the country to actively engage in global climate governance. It facilitates alignment with IMO regulations and China's actual conditions, effectively leveraging the advantages of China's sustainable fuel industry development, further reducing industry costs, and providing strong support for China to establish itself as an international center for sustainable fuel supply, bunkering, trading, and pricing. This will also serve as a crucial driving force for promoting the integrated development of transportation and energy in China.
CEEC has fully leveraged the unique strengths of its core units, such as China Power Engineering Consulting Group and Hydrogen Energy Company, in the investment, construction, and operation of sustainable fuel projects, process system integration, and carbon footprint accounting. These efforts have provided vital support for the preparation of "1+9+5+N" certification system documents, the development of a big data platform, and the trial operation. Meanwhile, CEEC has carried out a series of innovative practices in the sustainable fuel sector, planning and investing in the construction of multiple sustainable fuel production bases in Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, and other regions. It has also focused on developing core technological equipment for sustainable fuel preparation, such as biomass gasification and system dynamic matching, to jointly establish a comprehensive industrial chain encompassing "production, storage, transportation, bunkering, and utilization."
